All of our classes are suitable for beginner students, however, we recommend beginners and newer practitioners start with our Basics, Centred or Aligned classes, regardless of your fitness level. These classes help you to build your foundations gradually and safely, with a focus on instruction and alignment. Yoga is all about your personal journey on the mat, we have a ‘do what you can’ philosophy learning to read and understand your needs that shift daily and over the course of our lifetimes.
Do I have to book, or can I just show up?
You don't have to book, but we do recommend booking to secure your space. Some of our popular classes do fill up so please if you have not booked, make sure you arrive early to avoid disappointment.
Are the classes all levels?
Most of our classes are suitable for students of all levels of experience and we offer modifications in every class. Our teachers are all experienced in offering variations of different poses for beginner students, and more advanced modifications or progressions for the more experienced yogis. Please do check the timetable as we have a few level 2/3 classes to aid our experienced yogis growth.
How early should I arrive?
We recommend arriving 15 minutes before class to check in, set up your mat, talk with the teacher about any injuries or concerns you may have and prepare yourself for practice.
What should I bring?
All you need to bring is yourself, a water bottle, an open mind and a sense of play! We are happy to provide you with mats at no extra cost, as well we provide blocks, bolsters, straps and other nifty yoga props to help you out and also challenge you. Please feel free to bring your own yoga mat and yoga towel if you’d prefer.
What should I wear?
Comfortable athletic clothes that allow you move freely. No shoes or socks are needed inside of the yoga room.
How long are the classes?
Our classes range between 60, 75 and 90 and 120 minutes in length, be sure to check the timetable. We always start classes on time, you enter straight into the studio so if you do arrive slightly late please enter quietly and with respect to the focus of other students. The door is locked once we start teaching, so please arrive early to avoid disappointment.
Is there parking?
Yes, there is an free parking on the surrounding side streets in Ponsonby, it is a busy inner city community so we do advise allowing enough time to find a park during the daytime.
Are the classes heated?
Urban Ashram is not a hot yoga studio, we aim to make the room a comfortable temperature.
Can I practice during pregnancy?
Yes, yoga is a great way to keep your body feeling great and your mind in balance during pregnancy. Practicing during pregnant is a very individual process, so we recommended consulting with your health care professional. It is always very important to notify your teacher at the beginning of the class so they can offer you modifications.
What if I am injured?
That’s ok! Make sure to chat to your teacher about your injury before class and they will provide you with modifications for a safe practice.

Can I bring my children to class?
Yes, classes are open to ages 11+ but are not specifically geared towards children. If you have a question about your child participating in a class or event, please feel free to contact us. Unfortunately children are not allowed to wait in the area during class.
